U.S. Marine Corps - Large Scale Exercise

Introduction: Coordinating any exercise has its challenges. Planning for a large-scale exercise demands structured content and organization, especially when the exercise simulates the deployment of more than 50,000 U.S. troops.

The Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command (MAGTFTC) Large Scale Exercise (LSE) is an assessed MAGTF exercise at the Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB).  The MAGTFTC LSE is designed to enable live/virtual/constructive training for a MEB, with the MEB Command Element being the primary training audience.  The MAGTFTC LSE demonstrates the MAGTF’s core capabilities within the joint and combined operating environment with appropriate exercise control and training.


Challenges: Planners and event coordinators for the USMC Large Scale exercise needed an online location to provide its members knowledge management, exercise life-cycle plans, role-playing scenario and storyline development, announcements, and other Plan of Action and Milestones (POAMs) in one location.


Solutions: APAN was utilized to provide structured content and organization through the use of a SharePoint platform.

The community of interest provided over 450 of its members with planning conference, directions and lodging information for Camp Pendleton, and where exercise event locations.  During the exercise SITREPs and various scenarios for role-players were distributed.


Results: The U.S. Marine Corps has utilized APAN for LSE14, LSE15 and LSE16. The success of using structure content to simulate the planning, deployment and combat operations of a MEF-level force of more than 50,000 military members within a partner country while operating alongside coalition forces while enhancing command and control interoperability
